I saw you, you see me.
■ Artist statement
<Traces II: I saw you, you see me>
I have long observed the people around me—family and friends, people I passed on the street, strangers who happened to catch my eye, and even the small lives that once shared their time with me. Looking at them, observing them, and remembering them became another way of leaving traces of life.
When I remember these beings, what comes to mind is not the precise appearance of their faces. Rather, I remember the moments we shared in certain places, their repeated gestures and behaviors, and the emotions I felt as I looked at them.
The beings that remain in memory are always incomplete. As time passes, impressions fade. Some images become simplified, while others grow more vivid, and they begin to overlap and intertwine. Yet the impressions of certain moments remain intensely present in my memory. Whether good or bad, they are precious traces of my life.
I paint these traces and look at them again.
My paintings are not intended to record someone's appearance with precision. Rather, I seek to leave traces of the relationships that existed between us in the moments when I looked at them. The beings on the canvas begin with their actual appearance, but as they pass through memory, they gradually become something different.
As I paint, I look at them again. On the canvas, I call back the moments that once existed between us—moments that will never return.
And when the painting is complete, the direction of the gaze changes.
The beings I once looked at now begin to look back at me.
Visitors entering the exhibition look at the beings that exist within my memories. And those beings in the paintings look back at them. The viewers meet their gaze, and through that gaze, they look back at me.
**I saw you, you see me.**
In the first *Traces*, I left behind the places where I had lived, walked, and looked.
In the second *Traces*, I look again at the beings who remain as traces of my life.
