작가노트
김세훈 작가는 1994년 춘천에서 태어났다. 이후 서울에서 성장하고 자랐고, 재수 끝에 건국대학교 커뮤니케이션 디자인 학과에 입학한다.두 번의 학기를 마치고 그는 15년도에 군 입대를 한다. 생과 사를 오가는 혹독한 군 생활 속 경험들을 통해 그는 세상을 바라보는 눈이 달라졌고, 이 계기를 통해 자신의 길이 디자인이 아닌 다른 길 임을 어렴풋이 느끼게 되었다. 17년도에 전역을 한 뒤, 2년 간 어느 곳에도 집중하지 못하고 방황을 하며 고민에 빠졌다. 마침내 그는 자신이 가고자 하는 길이 디자인보다는 조금은 더 개인적이고 솔직한 것임을 깨닫는다. 이후, 순수미술을 배우기 위해 미국으로의 유학을 결심한다. 3년간의 유학 생활을 통해 그는 많은 것을 배웠고, 정말 많이도 외로운 순간들을 자주 마주했다.
그의 작품 세계는 대체로 이러한 고통과 외로움을 딛고 난 후 경험을 토대로 세상을 바라보며 설명하려 한다. 지극히 개인적이지만 그는 작품을 통한 표현을 수단으로 비슷한 상황을 겪는 또는 감정을 느끼는 다른 이들에게 힘이 되어주려 한다. 관객들 만이 느끼는 감정 또는 경험이 아닌 작가 자신 또한 비슷한 경험을 겪으며 살아왔다 공표하며 보는 이를 위로하고 작가 자신 또한 그들에게 위로를 받고 더 밝고 힘찬 미래를 꿈꾼다.
작가의 예명인 Vaultboy는 그가 가장 감명깊게 플레이했던 게임 Fallout 시리즈의 대표적인 캐릭터이다. 해당 캐릭터는 특정한 누군가를 지칭하지 않으며, 핵전쟁 이후 황폐화된 아포칼립스에서 살아남은 모두를 의미하는 캐릭터이다. 그는 자신의 작품이 자신만의 소소하고 개인적인 경험과 표현 이라기보다는 캐릭터인 볼트보이가 의미하는 힘든 시간 속에서 딛고 일어난 우리 모두의 경험의 산물이라고 생각하기에 해당 캐릭터를 자신의 예명으로 결정했다.
《 Exhibition Manifesto 》
우리는 각자 다른 존재이지만 같은 세상에 발 붙이고 살아간다는 공통점이 있다. 우리가 사는 이 곳은 너무나 무서운 것들이 많다. 죽음, 고통, 그리고 이별과 같이 수많은 장애물들이 우리의 매일에 도사리고 있다. 그 속에서 좌절하고 넘어지며 허덕이지만, 이 고통과 아픔이 지나고 나면 그것 또한 좋은 경험이었다 말할 수 있는 우리의 삶은 참으로 아름답다. 이 전시는 작가 개인의 경험 뿐만이 아닌 우리가 모두 겪는 삶의 장애물들을 어떠한 식으로 승화시키는지 그리고 보는 이 또한 나아갈 수 있다 라고 어깨를 도닥여주는 우리의 삶에 대한 예찬이다.

Artist Statement
Scott Kim / Vaultboy(b.1994, Korea)
Scott Kim was born in small town in South Korea, Chuncheon. He spent rest of childhood in Seoul and finally got into Konkuk Univ. majoring visual design. In 2015, after taking two semesters he joined the Korean Army. For two years of tough experience and life and death situations, Scott started to look at the world differently from before and thought maybe design is not the best choice after all. In 2017, he was discharged from the army and felt lost for two years deprived of a purpose in life to pursue. Eventually, Scott realized something that he wants was bit more personal and genuine than design. He decided to study art abroad in the States. For three years of studying art in Chicago, he learned numerous stuffs and faced lots of lonely situations. His art tries to explain the world with the memory of going through all the harsh and tough obstacles. It might be very personal but Scott is using his artwork as a tool to console others who have experienced similar stages of life. He is manifesting that we all are going through this obstacles and staying alive at last and show sympathy and dreaming of better future.
Scott’s pseudonym is Vaultboy. Vaultboy is from the game called Fallout from Bethesda Company. This character does not indicates specific individuals, instead it indicates all the human beings stayed alive after the apocalyptic world after atomic war. Scott’s art pieces mainly highlights how one depicts the world after overcoming obstacles, which is very similar to what Vaultboys are going through in the game. Scott wanted his artworks to be seemed as everyone can empathize with and trying to depict the world as we all can perceive.
Exhibition Manifesto
《 Even though the World is Filled with Scary Things 》
Although we are all different beings, we have something in common that we live in the same world. There are so many scary things in this place we live. There are countless obstacles lurking in our daily lives, such as death, pain, and separation. We are often frustrated, fall down, and struggle. However, after this pain and suffering we console ourselves. How beautiful is this boundless circle that we trying so hard to stay alive no matter how hectic this world is. This exhibition focuses not only on artist’s personal experience but also how his can be yours. He and you both are going through numerous obstacles in life and trying so hard to sublime in order to stay alive. In short, this exhibition is about admiration of our lives and consolation of patting each other’s shoulders.
