[작가노트]
우리 모두는 때때로 낯선 상황을 맞이한다. 처음 가 보는 장소, 새롭게 만나는 사람들과의 관계 등에서 우리는 어떻게 해야 할지 몰라 낯섦을 느끼곤 한다.
‘낯섦(Unfamiliarity)’는 ‘전에 본 기억이 없거나, 익숙하지 아니하다’라는 사전적 의미를 가지고 있다. 이를 다른 표현으로 옮겨 본다면 새로움에 대한 우리의 느낌이라고도 할 수 있다. 새로운 것을 만났을 때 우리는 호기심, 설렘, 불안, 두려움 등 여러 감정이 뒤섞이는 가운데 동시에 흥미와 놀라움을 발견하기도 한다.
이런 새로움을 맞닥뜨렸을 때 우리는 이미 경험한 것과 낯선 것 사이에서 조화를 찾으려고 한다. 아는 것과 모르는 것이 충돌하고, 여기에서 또 다른 시작점 그리고 방향점이 설정된다. 이 끝에서 낯선 세계에서 처음 느낀 새로움은 어느덧 익숙함으로 바뀐다. 이 익숙함은 이제 우리가 이미 경험한 것이 되어 또 다른 낯섦을 맞이했을 때 느껴지는 불안, 두려움, 설렘 등의 감정과 함께 우리의 내면에서 무궁무진하게 순환한다.
우리의 성장도 이와 같은 과정을 거친다. 가족이라는 울타리에서 출발해 ‘나’라는 사람을 알아가는 한 인간은 커 가면서 낯선 사람들을 만나게 된다. 같은 인간이면서도 각자의 취향과 성격, 개성 등을 갖고 있는 새로운 사람은 어느새 나와 유대를 쌓고 친구가 된다. 이 관계가 바깥으로 확장되어 사회와 연대 등으로 발전하며, 안으로는 나의 내면에 깊이를 더해 준다.
낯섦을 우리 안의 익숙함으로 받아들이는 이 과정은 대개 규칙적이지 않고, 잘 배열되어 있지도 않은 모습을 각자 자신의 방법으로 해석하고 탐구한다. 이 점에서 비눗방울의 구도와 배열이 낯섦을 맞는 우리의 마음과 비슷하다는 생각이 들었다.
또한 이번 작업 과정에서 나에게는 재료 자체가 낯선 존재로 다가오기도 하였다. 늘 익숙하게만 사용하던 물감과 호분을 스케치라는 형식에 맞춰 그리기보다 더 자유롭고 생동감 있는 모습에 초점을 맞추었다. 그리하여 시간이 변화하는 순간을 포착하고자 하였다. 시간이 지나면 변화하는 휘발성을 지니고 있는 물성이 화면 속에 남아 영속성을 부여받으며, 동시에 그 안에서 여러 의미로 변화하며 회화적 모습으로 자연스럽게 순환되는 모습을 보여주려는 것이다.
새로운 것을 만났을 때 느끼는 낯섦과 두려움, 불안함은 우리 모두가 인생에서 맞닥뜨리는 감정이지만, 이것이 다양한 시간의 의미로 재조명된다면 새로운 빛과 시각의 구도로 우리 자신의 본질적인 아름다움을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.

[Artist statement]
We all face unfamiliar situations sometimes. We often feel unfamiliar because we don't know what to do in places we've never been to, or in relationships with new people, etc.
"Unfamiliarity" has a dictionary meaning of "I have never seen it before or I am not familiar with it." If we translate this into another expression, it can be said that it is our feeling of novelty. When we meet something new, we find interest and surprise at the same time amid a mixture of emotions such as curiosity, excitement, anxiety, and fear.
When faced with this novelty, we try to find harmony between what we have already experienced and what we are not familiar with. Knowing and not knowing collide, and another starting point and direction are set. At the end of this, the first novelty felt in an unfamiliar world turns into familiarity. This familiarity is now something we have already experienced and circulates endlessly inside us with emotions such as anxiety, fear, and excitement felt when facing another unfamiliarity.
Our growth goes through the same process. A human being who starts from the fence of family and gets to know a person named "I" meets strangers as he grows up. A new person, who is the same human being but has their own taste, personality, and characteristics, suddenly builds bonds with me and becomes friends. This relationship expands outward and develops into society and solidarity, and inside, it adds depth to my inner self.
This process of accepting strangers as familiarity within us usually interprets and explores irregular, ill-arranged appearances in their own ways. In this respect, I thought that the composition and arrangement of bubbles were similar to our unfamiliar mind.
Also, during this work, the material itself came to me as a stranger. The focus was on a freer and more lively appearance rather than drawing paints and hobun, which were always used to, in the form of sketches. Thus, we tried to capture the moment when time changes. Over time, the volatile physical properties that change remain on the screen and are given permanence, and at the same time, they change in various meanings and naturally circulate in a pictorial form.
The unfamiliarity, fear, and anxiety we all face in life when we meet something new, but if this is re-examined in various meanings of time, we will be able to find our own essential beauty with a new light and visual composition.
