고구려(高句麗) –The Space of Time
나의 일련의 판화작업들은 고구려 벽화의 이미지와 현대 문명의 시각적 표현의 결합을 통해 유기적으로 변화하는 시간과 공간의 자화상이며 그 둘의 의사소통의 표현이다. 고구려 고대문명은 한국뿐만 아니라 동북 아시아의 긴 역사 속에서 중추적 위치에 있었으며 아직도 그 문화적 유산의 흔적은 한반도를 포함하여 중국과 일본의 문화 속에서 계승되고 있다. 또한 고구려 고대 벽화의 이미지들은 동양적 시각에서 바라본 공간과 시간에 대한 패러다임으로써 과거에 존재했다는 문화적, 역사적 인식으로부터 출발한 고증의 집합체이다. 아울러 벽화는 삶과 죽음에 대한 총체적인 인식의 표현이자 이상화된 삶과 죽음이 결합된 세계의 표현이다.
인간의 삶과 죽음이라는 시간의 유한함은 고분이라는 특정한 공간안에서 고구려 고분 벽화라는 이미지를 통해 구현되어 있는데 그 둘은 분리되어 있지 않으며 유기적으로 얽혀 있다. 이러한 삶과 죽음을 바라보는 양면적인 관점들은 고분이라는 구조 안에서 서로 연결되어 있으며 인간들은 그 안에서 다시 태어나고 영원한 삶을 영위한다. 즉, 고분은 죽은 자들의 또 하나의 세계이자 우주인 것이다.
과거와 현재를 하나의 특정한 공간 안에 구현하기 위한 방법인 현대 문명을 상징하는 여러 가지 이미지와 고구려 고분 벽화의 시각적 요소 들과의 대비 또는 조화를 통해 나의 판화는 또 다른 3차원의 시간과 공간의 구조물로 재 창조된다. 또한 그것들을 통해서 역사 속의 시간과 공간의 유기적인 관계는 나의 작업을 통해 발굴되고 복원할 수 있게끔 한다.
작품들은 주로 고구려 고분 벽화 이미지의 재현과 여러 가지 시간의 시각적 은유와 상징의 표현으로 나누어져 있다. 예를 들어, 실크스크린기법으로 제작된 달력이나 시계 또는 시간표 같은 직접적인 표현 요소, 시간과 공간의 결합체를 상징하는 지도와 자동차등의 이미지들과 결합하여 고대로부터 쌓이고 축적된 시간이 만들어내는 형이상학적인 시간의 공간성을 상징함과 동시에 물리적 공간성을 지금 현재로 복원하기 위한 방법인 동판화 기법 (에칭과 아쿼틴트) 그리고 색감을 강조한 실크스크린 작품은 벽화 이미지와 현대적 이미지와의 선명한 대비와 함께 다른 질감의 종이에 찍은 실크스크린 이미지를 중첩함으로써 보다 다양한 결을 가진 시간과 공간이 교차하는 작업을 가능하게 한다. 판화 작업 외에 페이퍼 커팅, 동판 기법, 실크스크린 기법, 이미지 트랜스퍼(Transfer)등 여러 가지 판화기법을 응용한 북 아트 작품은 책장(Pages)이라는 레이어(Layer)를 통해 표현되는 시간의 연속성과 동시에 중첩되는 공간성이 잘 구현된 적합한 매체이자 시간과 공간의 구조물을 상징한다.
궁극적으로 나의 작업은 고구려 벽화라는 과거의 유산을 통해 시간의 영원함과 그 시간성이 구현되어 있는 고분이라는 공간을 현대로 가져와 판화라는 또 다른 공간안에서 복원하고 재해석하고자 하는 것이다.
이번 전시의 작품들은 기존의 판화작업에서 탈피하여 다양한 두께의 종이를 이용하여 고분이라는 공간을 추상적으로 또는 입체적으로 표현하였으며 이를 통해 좀더 단순한 구조적인 조형미를 추구하고자 하였다.

Artist Statement
Goguryeo (高句麗) – Space of Time
My prints are portrait and visual communication between time and space in organic transition through the integration with mural images of ancient Korea, Goguryeo (高句麗) and visual metaphor of today’s modern world.
Goguryeo have had an ongoing and a pivotal position in the long history of Korea and its images in mural paintings represent as well as an oriental paradigm of time and space and a reference of strong cultural awareness of an existence from the past. The perception of life and death is represented through the integration of themselves and they are not separated or opposed to one another in structure of a tumulus. Life and death can be reincarnated and live eternally in the celestial world of tumulus. The tumulus was meant to be a second home for the deceased after all.
In order to embrace past and present in a particular space, I gathered selected visual elements of the mural paintings of Goguryeo and general cultural legacies of modern culture. Therefore, the transition of time and space is excavated and restored in the way of in the way of reconstruction into the another 3-dimensional in my works.
The procedure of making prints consists of a representation of mural images of Goguryeo and integrated composition of various visual metaphors of time and space. The images range from physical indicators like clock, calendar and time table to abstract symbols representing time and space, such as memory, dream and maps, automobiles etc. In addition to these elements, textual statements of excerpts and quotations from literature, essays, and poems may be included.
My works eventually enable to restore and reinterpret the eternity and extensity depicted in ancient tomb of Goguryeo into in this present time via another space of printmaking.
The works of this exhibition represent the spatial impression and structural aesthetic value of tumulus via abstractive or solid depiction using papers of various thicknesses.
