작가노트
나는 숲의 작은 요소들인 잎, 꽃잎, 씨앗 등을 금속 판에 표현한다. 판 전체를 어두운 색 물감으로 덮은 후 니들로 선을 긁어 금빛과 은빛 드로잉을 만든다. 어둠에서 스며 나오는 금색과 은색은 실제 메탈 재료를 사용할 때만 볼 수 있는 반사된 밝은 빛이며, 물감이 나타내기 힘든 자연 속의 강한 빛을 표현한다. 반복된 강박적 스크래칭이 만들어내는 빛나는 선들은 내가 자연을 나타내는 데 중요한 역할을 한다.
나는 어린시절의 대부분을 온갖 식물이 가득한 아버지의 정원속에서 보냈다. 내 머릿속에는 아버지의 뜰과 내가 본 숲들의 모습이 섞인 하나의 정원이 들어있어서, 나는 늘 그 속 디테일 하나하나를 그린다. 하찮아 보이는 자연의 작은 것들을 줌 인, 줌 아웃하면서 식물의 생명력을 표현하고자 한다. 겨울의 씨앗은 죽은 듯 말라 가지에 겨우 매달려 있지만, 이것을 손바닥에 놓고 들여다보면 씨앗을 감싼 껍질의 거미줄 같은 디테일에서 소용돌이치는 에너지를 느끼게 된다.
흰 하늘타리 꽃잎의 끝부분은 가늘고 길게 갈라져 실타래처럼 엉킨 모습으로 혼돈의 에너지를 보여준다. 꽃잎이나 잎사귀의 잎맥, 줄기의 수관, 나무의 껍질 등 식물의 많은 기관에는 꿈틀대는 모습의 패턴들이 숨어 있다. 이 세밀한 것들은 나를 매료시키고, 나는 그 패턴들이 그려내는 자연의 끊이지 않는 에너지를 따라 그린다.

Artist Statement
On a metal plate I draw small elements of the forest such as leaves, flower petals and seeds. After covering the entire surface with a dark shade of paint, I use fine needles to scratch it away to make a gold or silver drawing.
The shimmering lines possess bright lights that are only seen in metals and effectively describe nature’s strong lights which cannot be recreated through paint. The lines made through repetitive and somewhat obsessive scratching also play a significant role in enabling me to portray nature.
I spent most of my childhood in my father’s garden filled with all sorts of plants. In my head, there exists a garden with overlapping scenes from my father’s garden and what I have seen from the forests I have been to. What I draw are the details inside that garden in my mind. I zoom in and out the little things in nature to describe the force of life in plants.
A dried-up seed found in wintertime seems dead and just barely holds on to the branch, but when you put in on your hand and examine it, you may be able to feel the swirling energy created by elaborate details found in the spiderweb-like shell. The petals of a snake gourd flower split into long thread-like ends, and their awesome entanglements create a certain kind of chaotic energy.
Flower veins, petals, leaf veins and crowns withhold dynamic patterns. Enchanted by their microscopic images, I attempt to portray the restless force that nature creates.
