작가노트 

​

무한한 의미가 증식되고 있는 세상 속 우리의 우주는 무한하다. 

본질, 이면의 것, 진의라는 단어들이 어릴 적부터 머릿속에 맴돌았다. 인간으로 태어났기에 (어쩌면) 당연하게도 인간의 본질이 무엇인지 이 세상에 던져진 개인들은 각각 ‘어떤 생각들을 갖고 있는지’는 언제나 흥미로운 탐구 주제였다. 그 답이 나는 도덕적 자아와 자기검열을 거치지 않은 무의식 안에 있다고 확신했기에 프로이트의 학문과 그에게 영향받은 초현실 학파에 매료되었다. 프로이트가 자신의 무의식을 파악하는 기법으로 제시한 ‘꿈일기’를 몇 년동안 작성하고 해석하며 스스로를 분석하기도 했다. 
이런 심리파악에 대한 갈증으로 현재는 대학원에서 심리학을 전공하고 있다. 이 곳에서 프로이트의 학설뿐 아니라 다양한 학자와 기법을 배우며 언어라는 도구를 사용해 한 사람의 내면을 파악하고 치료하는 사례들을 보고 때로는 한없이 약하다가도 강해지는 인간에 대한 호기심은 작품에 자주 등장하는 ‘감정’과 대부분의 경우 많은 고통의 원천으로써 작용하면서 아이러니하게 인간에게 필수적인 ‘관계’에 대한 천착으로 이어진다. 
꿈과 무의식, 초현실주의, 심리학 모두 상징과 이면의 의미를 더욱 중요하게 생각하는 탐구 분야이다. 이 길을 순서대로 또한, 동시에 걷고 있는 나의 그림 속 등장하는 비현실적 오브제로 표상된 상징들은 주제가 갖는 의미로 이어지는 창구로서의 역할을 수행한다. 
심리치료의 기본은 공감이다. 과한 욕심일지 모르겠지만 나는 나의 그림을 통해 소수 혹은 다수의 사람들이 자신의 이야기가 투영된 캔버스를 통해 공감받고 작게나마 위로를 얻어가길 소망한다. 

 

<Persona Series>에 대하여

​

'페르소나'는 심리학 용어로 타인과 사회를 대면할 때 표출되는 또 다른 나이다. 학술적으로 방어기제에 포함되지 않는 개념이긴 하나 본원적 측면에서 스스로를 보호하고 위장하기 위해 탄생한 이것은 개인의 무기로도 갑옷으로도 사용할 수 있는 장치이다.
그 아래 감춰진 것은 초자아로부터 검열되지 않고 사회에서 허락되지 않는 요소로 구성된 내면이다. 우리는 이것들을 전면에 내세웠을 때 유발될 수 있는 관계에서의 누락, 사회에서의 배척이라는 위험을 감수하는 대신 자의적으로 친절하고 이타적인 페르소나를 만들어낸다. 불균형적으로 뒤섞인 내면의 것들을 부드럽고 매끄러운 실크천을 뒤집어쓰는 행위는 에너지소모와 감정적 고통을 감수하는 행위이지만 그러한 일종의 수련을 통해야만 우리는 사회에서 온전히 허락받은 나로서 존재하지 않는가. 그러나 아이러니하게도 고립되지 않기 위해 만들어진 이 페르소나와 진짜 ‘나’는 시작점에서는 완전히 달랐을 수 있으나 시간이 경과할수록 그 경계가 모호해져 어느 지점부터 진짜 ‘나’로 규정지을 수 있는지 알 수 없게 된다. 진짜 ‘나’가 페르소나가 되고 페르소나가 진짜 ‘나’가 되는 혼재된 존재들 속에서 우리는 매순간 헤맨다.
당신의 페르소나는 진짜 당신이 아니라고 말할 수 있는가. 

여러 사례의 심리상담을 통해 개개인의 내면을 관찰하고,
피사체를 촬영하는 장면과 같이 무채색 배경에 놓여진 실크천을 뒤덮은 오브제를 표현한 것이 Persona Series이다.
작품과 함께 전시된 인터뷰 내용은 내담자의 동의하에 일부 편집된 축어록이다.

Artist Statement​

​

In this world, our universe multiplying infinite meanings, is infinite. 

Words like ‘essence’, inside fact and real intention, have been circling in my mind since I was young. It must be natural to think about what  human essence is. The kinds of thoughts every individual in the world has are an interesting subject for research with our existence in being born as human beings. As I came to be sure that the answers are in the unconscious that does not go through judgements of ethical egoism and self-censorship, I have been fascinated by the study by Freud and the school of Surrealism he influenced. I wrote a Dream Diary that Freud suggested as a technique to understand the unconscious and attempted to analyze it for years. 

This thirst to understand my psychology led me to major in psychology in graduate school. In school I learned about both the study by Freud and also the studies by various scholars, and studied many cases that attempted to grab human insides using the tool of language and overcoming one’s limits. I realized that my interest towards human beings who sometimes become endlessly weak or strong turn out to be emotions in my practice and sources of pain while ironically continuing as a bridge in making relationships, which are essential to human beings. 

Dreams, the unconscious, Surrealism and psychology are the fields of research that put emphasis on symbols and the interior meanings. My practice, which also steps on the same path, has unrealistic objects that symbolize subjects, and they work to bring related meanings. 

The basis of psychotherapy is sympathy. It may be my selfish desire but I am hoping for some or many people to receive sympathy for their stories through my work on canvas and to be consoled even if it is not on target.. 

About <Persona Series>

​

Persona is the psychological term referring to a self expressed when confronting others or society. It is a concept that does not scientifically belong to defense but is born to protect and camouflage the self in its primary aspect. It can work as a weapon or as armor.  

What is hidden behind myself is an interior composed of elements that are not censored by superego and permitted by society. When we show this up front we can survive the potential loss of relationships, the so-called exclusion from society, and create a kind and selfless persona. An act that covers up irregular and mixed interior matters with a soft and smooth silk fabric is an act that brings loss of energy and emotional pains but these practices make us become who we are in society. However, a persona that is created not to be isolated and ‘the real me’ are ironically different from their starting point but as time passes their boundaries become ambiguous and they become difficult to be what is real within me. As ‘the real me’ becomes a persona, and a persona becomes ‘the real me’, we are confused at every moment. 

Can you say that your persona is not the real you?

The Persona Series represents the objects covered by silk fabric with achromatic color backgrounds of scenes after looking at individuals’ interiors through various psychology consultation cases. 

The interviews that are exhibited together with a final work are the edited verbatim counseling records made public with the agreement of that individual.
