어떻게 외국인의 시각이 한국에서 친숙한 장면들을 변화시킬 수 있을까? 이번 작업들은 문화적으로, 인종적으로, 언어학적으로 이 곳에서는 문외한인 나의 일상에 발을 들여놓기 위한 초대이다. 시각적으로 재현할 수 있는 것 만큼 중요한 것은 무엇일까? 외국인으로서, 나는 내가 한국에 얼마나 오래 머물지 확신할 수 없기 때문에, 내가 선택하는 작품들은 종종 이곳의 삶의 어떤 측면을 나타낼 수 있는 작품들이다. 나는 외국인과 외부인이라는 맥락에서 정체성을 찾는 과정에 대한 폭넓은 이야기를 구성하기 위해 기억과 우정을 탐구한다. 다양한 장면과 관점을 공유하면서 이국적인 발견에 대한 관심이 아니라 평범하고 익숙한 것에서 차이와 소외감을 느낄 수 있는 가능성에 관심이 있다.

Artist Statement​

 

How does the lens of foreignness change otherwise familiar scenes in Korea? This is an invitation to step into my routines, someone who is culturally, racially, and linguistically an outsider here: what visually significant enough to reproduce and why? As a foreigner, I am never certain how long I’ll be in Korea, so the compositions I choose are often ones that can represent some aspect of life here. I probe memories and friendships to construct a broader story of foreigners living in Korea and their process of finding an identity within the context of being an outsider. In sharing various scenes and perspectives, I’m not interested in the “exotic,” but in the possibility of feeling difference and alienation in the ordinary and familiar.
