당신의 세계를 스칠 때
인생을 가까이서 보면 비극이고 멀리서 보면 희극이라 했던가. 내가 생각해온 삶의 모습도 그와 비슷하다. 삶은 누구에게도 특별히 호의적이지 않으며, 모든 사람들은 결국 각자 개인의 욕망으로 살아가고 그것들은 우리가 사는 풍경을 구성한다. 우리는 그저 각자의 시간을 살며 존재할 뿐이다. 누구보다 특별하나 동시에 아무것도 아닌 존재로.
누구나 자신의 몫이 있고 살아남아야만 하는 목적이 있다. 그래서 나는 당신의 세계를 스쳐만 보고 싶다. 서로의 삶에 발을 담그고 손을 대기보다는 스치듯 지나며 아직 살아 있는 나의 온기를 잠시 더했다가 가볍게 떠나고 싶다.
동물의 세계는 지극히 자연적이고 본능적이다. 그 어떤 계산도 없이, 그저 각자의 욕망에 치중한 채 자연적으로 살아간다. 식물과 욕망의 공통점은 부지런하다는 점이다. 그런 의미에서 인간은 식물의 욕망을 지니고 있다. 그러므로 나는 나와 나의 욕망, 타인과 타인의 욕망을 동식물로 표현한다. 쫓고 있던 욕망만큼 피곤이 겹쳐지고 죄가 겹쳐지며, 상처주고 상처받다가 불나방처럼 나가떨어지는 우리 삶의 단상을, 각자의 욕망으로 인해 상처를 주고받으며 살아가지만 동시에 서로에게 위로받는 우리를 그린다.
모든 것들이 저마다 제멋대로 존재하는 그림 속에서 나는 차라리 편안함을 느낀다. 정리되지 않고, 누구 하나 앞서거나 뒤지지 않는 공간에서 우리는 그냥 이렇게 존재하고 있다. 모든 것이 다 따로따로지만 그렇게 어울려 서로의 시간을 살아가는 것처럼, 이 속에서 자신을 보고 또 타인을 보고 그렇게 그냥 살아갔으면 한다. 인류의 역사에는 언제나 비극이 가득해 왔으나 그 어떤 불행의 시대에서도 인간이 행복하고자 하는 것은 죄가 아니었기 때문이다.
Artist Statement
When I glanced your world
Life is a tragedy from a close perspective and a comedy from a distance. As the quote refers, life does not seem to be favorable to anyone. Eventually, human beings, as individual, just follow their desire while they live.
In other words, we live for our desire and this is what makes our life valuable. Therefore there is no human being who should be considered special or worthless. It is rather that everyone just endeavors to survive.
In the animal world, everything flows with its nature, whereas all circumstances happen instinctively. And I believe human world works as just as the animal world. For instance, human's desire and the desire of the plant share in common- both human being and plant are diligent. Therefore I portray my desire (and human being’s desire) as the figure of the plant and animal. As our desires emerge, we can sometimes hurt each other, but at the same time we can also console each other.
I rather feel comfortable in my paintings where everything is arbitrary. I like the idea of us living in the unorganized space where nobody has to trace each other. As if different individuals cooperate to live, we should always reflect not only on ourselves but also on others’s life. Remember, the history of the mankind has always been full of tragedies, but unhappiness was never the sin for those who wish to be happy.
